How long do shrimp live?

Most aquarium shrimp live a year or two. Here is what to expect, what old age looks like, and what helps them last.

The short answer

In one line

Expect roughly one to two years from Neocaridina such as cherry shrimp, and often a little longer from Amano shrimp. These are typical ranges, not guarantees.

Shrimp are short-lived animals compared with most aquarium fish. A colony lasts far longer than any single shrimp because the adults are replaced by their young, so a healthy breeding colony can stay going for years while individual shrimp come and go.

Typical lifespans

Neocaridina, including cherry, Blue Dream and other colour lines, are commonly kept for about one to two years. Caridina such as Crystal Red are usually described in a similar range, though they are more sensitive to water conditions, so a mistake shows up faster. Amano shrimp are often reported to live somewhat longer, commonly around two to three years. Published figures vary between sources and tanks, so we give ranges rather than a single number.

Shrimp bought from a store are rarely newborns. Many are juveniles or young adults, and the time they have already lived counts against those totals.

What old age looks like

An older shrimp tends to move around less, spends more time resting, and may breed less often or carry smaller clutches. Colour can look a little duller. There is usually no single clear sign, and a shrimp that is simply old often just does not wake up one day.

Sudden deaths are a different story. Several shrimp dying in a short time, or new shrimp dying in the first days, points to water, acclimation or a contaminant rather than age. See why shrimp die.

What helps shrimp live longer

Stable water matters more than perfect water, so keep parameters steady and make water changes small and regular. Acclimate new arrivals slowly using the drip method. Keep copper away from the tank, as covered in medications and copper. Feed small amounts, see feeding shrimp, and avoid very warm water, since heat speeds up a shrimp’s life and is generally thought to shorten it. See tank temperature for ranges.

In San Diego, Neocaridina cope well with dechlorinated tap water. Caridina need softer, low-TDS water and are not a good match for straight tap water, so match the species to the water you have. See San Diego tap water for shrimp.

Questions we get asked

How long do cherry shrimp live?

Cherry shrimp and other Neocaridina are commonly kept for about one to two years. Some live longer in a stable tank, and some do not reach a year if conditions are poor, so treat any figure as a typical range rather than a promise.

How long do Amano shrimp live?

Amano shrimp are often reported to live longer than Neocaridina, commonly around two to three years in a stable tank. Reports vary, and there is no guarantee for any individual shrimp.

Do shrimp die of old age?

Yes. Over time an older shrimp slows down, breeds less and eventually dies without any obvious cause. If shrimp die within days or weeks of coming home, or several die at once, old age is unlikely to be the reason and the water and acclimation are the first things to check.

How can I help my shrimp live longer?

Keep the water stable, acclimate new shrimp slowly, avoid copper, feed small amounts and keep the tank at a moderate temperature. Steady conditions matter more than chasing perfect numbers.

How old are the shrimp I buy?

Shrimp are usually sold as juveniles or young adults, and their exact age is hard to tell from the outside. Size and colour give a rough idea of how mature they are. Ask us in store if you want to know which are the youngest.
